What towering in the city aren’t merely the skyscrapers, but the hexagon rock columns in the rural area of Sai Kung. Vividly shaped as concrete snakes, the unique stones are all situated among the bizarre stones at Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark.

The classic picture on 500 HKD notes

These numbers may have you petrified that Hong Kong is consisted of 75 percent of rural area, and in fact, the 1108 square km of land implausibly offers 15 locations for geo-sightseeing, of which High Island is the quite popular of hexagon rock columns formation that you may have seen on the 500 HKD bank notes.

Rarely does Hong Kong have earthquake nowadays though, it did frequently more than 140 million years ago. The volcano fiercely wreaked havoc, shrouded ashes and lavas in the area, shortly being folded by plate movement in a half-melting condition. Eroded by wind and water perennially, the rocks underwent a hundred thousand coincidences and finally turned to a masterpiece barely found in the planet.

The Monstrous 3-metre Columns

There are several locations to explore the rock columns, but the most magnificent one should be High Island Reservoir East Dam, in which the S-shape columns must not be skipped when the greatest columns standing 3 metres is the cadenza. However, the visiting point is fenced off just in a short distance, please try not to get too closed to avoid falling stones.

Exploring further in East Dam that is located in the Geo Park is fairly a wholesome option. Go visit our article talking about High Island Reservoir East Dam.
