Hidden in a cluster of stores at the roundabout of Stanley with only a small signboard hanging, the famous Dai Pai Dong Si Yik is also hiding an untold story. The present Stanley seems like a romantic town of all the western vibes congregated but it was just a squatter village where thousands of villagers resided in the past. Because of the squatter home demolition and constant developments, the owners were forced to move their food stall multiple times and even lost their homes. The uncompromising conditions have made them reluctant to changes, but at least, Si Yik remains the most original.

It might not be the most tourist welcoming eatery: no AC, cramped seating, menu with no English and poker-faced owners. Their signature dish Hong Kong-style Kaya French Toast is the reason why people still flock to the place. It is particularly fluffier than the regular ones as they insist on separating the eggs whites and yolks to create the cloud-like batter to coat the bread with, despite much efforts. As for the most desirable Kaya flavors, duck eggs are used instead to make the classic Malaysian jam, which is embedded between the slices of the golden bread topped with a slab of butter, allowing an explosion of sweetness. With a cup of milk tea on the side, it could be a perfect combo for your guilty pleasure brunch.

If you do not want to miss the best local French Toast in town, treat it as the first stop of your Stanley day trip as it is only open every day till 1:30 pm and closed on Tuesdays.
